Have You Tried the Gold Line Yet?

Yes, Monrovians still have to drive to Pasadena to catch the train to LA, but now's a great time to practice your strap-hanging skills.

In light of recent developments about the long awaited start of construction on the extension of the Gold Line through Monrovia, here is a look at the experience of riding on the line.

It is easy, but takes some getting used to, and if Monrovians want to take a complicated trip, such as down to Staples Center for an LA Kings game or the neighboring Convention Center for the LA Auto Show this weekend, here are some tips.

First, it seems somehow treasonous to take the train to a car show, but there is a serious benefit. Parking for Staples or for the Auto Show is $12.

Since you need a new fare each time you board, the All Day Pass for $6 is the best bet. You can ride all day on all lines and buses, except freeway and express buses.

If two people go, you break even on the parking. Plus, you don't have to fight the traffic.

Second, since the LA Auto Show is all about earth friendly cars this year, taking the train seems very appropriate.

Third, the train is, frankly, a lot of fun. Riders see a part of LA that is hidden. Sure, some of it looks into people's back yards, but take the time to look outside the train and a whole different world comes alive.

Now, getting to the Convention Center isn't a straightforward train ride. You have to take THREE trains.

You currently start at the station at Madre Street and the 210 Freeway in Pasadena. Find the ticket machine and buy a one way ticket. It's $1.50. Take your ticket and change.

You can pay cash, but don't drop in a $20 bill unless you want nineteen dollar coins.

DO NOT try to ride free. LA Sheriffs deputies patrol and ask to see tickets. You do not want to know what that ticket will cost!

The Gold Line will get you to Union Station. This place is an architectural wonder. The last of the major railway stations built in the United States. Take the time to look around.

At Union Station, riders must then follow the signs to the Red Line. That's the subway that will take you to either North Hollywood or out to Wilshire and Western. Either train will do for this trip.

At the third stop, 7th Street, get off and go up the stairs to catch the Blue Line. It goes to Long Beach and is worth a trip on it's own.

You will only need to ride one whole stop. Get off at Pico. Seems like a waste, but there is no need to go into the politics of mass transit right now.

As you get off the train, look to your left. One block away is the Convention Center and Staples! It's a shorter walk than from most of the parking lots. Easy.

One of the things that seems to get in the way of changing our attitudes about public transportation is the idea of sharing our space with others.

Yes, in the morning and the evening, the trains are crowded. However, the people are all just trying to get to work, no one is out to steal from you.

Another is time. It took an hour for the trip to the Convention Center from Monrovia. During Rush hour. You cannot beat that.

"It's fantastic," said Susan, a fellow traveler, "I don't have to drive. This is ideal."

"It's important to support the system financially," said Iris, another rider. "Maybe our system will eventually be as good as the one in Mexico City."

What experiences have you had taking the Gold Line into LA? Tell us in the comments.

Correction about the fare. Each segment requires a different ticket. The best way is to purchase a roundtrip ticket at the onset of your trip. It comes out cheaper and you don't have to purchase 6 different tickets and the time it takes for each one.

Thanks for bringing that to our attention! I've amended the article to suggest the All Day Pass for $6.00. I checked with Metro Info and that can be used on multiple routes.

Don't go to the Madre Station before 1 p.m. during the week, the parking lot will be full, occasional spaces open up after that. There is no neighborhood parking available at all. Weekends are fine. Also, senior all-day, ride all lines, pass is about $1.85, a wonderful bargain. We take the rail a lot, driving over from Arcadia, then connecting to other lines, usually in search of food in Los Angeles.
