UPDATE: Old Town Standoff Ends in Suicide

A man turns a gun on himself after threatening a woman with it, a city spokesman said.

A man shot and killed himself on the sidewalk outside an empty Old Town storefront following a domestic dispute Saturday afternoon, a city spokesman said.

The man was arguing with a woman outside the former store in the 300 block of Myrtle Avenue and pulled a gun some time after noon Saturday, city spokesman Dan Bell said.

The man was pointing the gun at the woman's head when police arrived on scene, Monrovia Police Sgt. Dan Verna said. When police told him to drop the weapon, he pushed the woman out of the way and turned the gun on himself, Verna said.

"He then pointed the gun at himself and fired," Verna said.

Police responded to a 911 phone call made at 12:01 p.m., Verna said. A woman was heard screaming on the line, and police were able to trace the cell phone to the area where the shooting occurred.

The man, described as a Texas native in his mid-40s, was the woman's ex-husband and he had followed her and her child to the location, Verna said. He was the father of the woman's 7-year-old child, who was present during the incident, he said.

Police initially had trouble finding out the source of the conflict because the man and woman both spoke Mandarin Chinese and required an interpreter, Verna said.

A coroner's official declined to identify the man Saturday afternoon because his next of kin had not been notified.
