Whiz Kids: Local Girl Scouts Get Silver Award

Girl Scout Troop 637 received their Silver Award on May 19.

Who:  Mara Armenta (9th grade, ), Stephanie Cox (10th grade Monrovia HS), Morgan Grana (10th grade, Bishop Amat HS), Ashley Jordan (8th grade, Clifton MS), Keeanna McGlone (9th grade, Monrovia HS), Kassandra Silcott (8th grade, Clifton MS), Jasmine Thomas (10th grade, Monrovia HS), Caylee Walker (9th grade, Monrovia HS), Bonnie Zucco (8th grade, Clifton MS), and Zoë Zucco (10th grade, Monrovia HS).

Accomplishment:  The ten members of Troop 637 received their Silver Award on May 19.

Key To Awesomeness:  Under the leadership of troop leader Alex Zucco and assistant leader Karla McGlone, the girls earned their Silver Award, which they received at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Temple City on May 19, along with 300 other Cadettes from the Greater Los Angeles Area Council. The troop has begun an ongoing project at to update emergency earthquake kits for the Great California Shake Out each November. They’ve also hosted an emergency supplies drive to raise awareness of earthquake safety. They now serve annually in the position of "Earthquake Kit Coordinator" for the Clifton PTSA.

In January 2011 the girls began working on their Gold Award proposals—the Eagle Scout equivalent for Girl Scouts—and completed multiple prerequisites. These included a "Sisterhood Project," in which they hosted a Junior Troop of girls from and gave them tips on how to manage the transition from elementary school to middle school. As part of this project they gave the girls a map which detailed good places to eat on the campus of Clifton Middle School, and showed the activities offered at their new school. They also advised the girls on ways to navigate new social pressures, including gossip and peer pressure, friends and ‘frenemies,’ and making careful choices with regard to texting, e-mail, and social media sites.
