Patch Blog: United Hope for Animals Featured Pet: Jewel

Jewel, a young spayed shorthaired female cat, is available for adoption through United Hope for Animals, a local animal rescue supporting the Baldwin Park shelter.

Sometimes all it takes is a little PR to get the word out about something wonderful. In this case, we are talking about a sweet cat that got really lucky at the right time. She was being brought to the to be dropped off with her litter of kittens, and was literally carried there in a cloth sack.

A quick-eyed volunteer for United Hope for Animals spotted her, and called me up, knowing that I had offered to foster a few kitties. I had heard that the shelter was overflowing with cats, and the odds weren't good of her getting out alive.

When I first laid eyes in her, I saw what a pretty cat she was, especially her eyes. One is green and the other gold. Her coat is a bright white and she has a light gray stripe on her head. Quite the looker! I decided to call her Jewel.

Jewel had a rough start in life, and was toughing it out on her own with her new litter in a sheltered spot near someone's garage. They fed her occasionally, but had no money for any type of veterinary care. When her litter arrived, they realized it was time to take them to a shelter.

When Jewel arrived at my house with her babies, it took all my wits to get them all treated and cared for and housed--but somehow we got through it. I had to quarantine them for a month before moving them into a larger space, but now they are fairly comfortable, with a little bit more room to roam.

Most of her kittens got adopted (her small kitten, Ava, is also available for adoption), but Jewel is still with me, and could use leg up to get her face "out there" so she can finally find her forever home.

Jewel is affectionate and serene. She loves to play with feather toys, lie in the sun, and will make any space look more elegant. She will great you with the most pleasant "trilling" sound and roll on her back to get a belly rub.

She would do well on her own or with other cats. She is non-agressive with other cats and could make a good second kitty. She could also be adopted with her older tuxedo kitten, Ava.

Jewel is spayed, up-to-date on shots, healthy and microchipped. If you or someone you know is interested in adopting Jewel, please contact amanda@hope4animals.org.

I kind of lost interest when, along with the Lion's barbecue, the carnival disappeared but thereRead More were always people I knew in the parade so I kept the date. Now that the parade is gone, it's just another festival day in town. Times change and this kind of under-stated event is what people want. The old Monrovia Days used to be a day we could all get together and have fun. Now, people are too busy with their own lives and "community" doesn't mean what it once did.

Interesting. There was one person who decided that letting Monrovia Day slide with nothing doneRead More wasn't gonna play. BY HERSELF and her family and friends planned all of it and set everything up. That person was Keely Milliken. It was astounding how much got done, and without financial support or the usual cast of players to do anything. There were many pitfalls, permits that needed approval and what not...Perhaps if you voiced your displeasure to the City Council and volunteered your personal money and weeks of planning and organizing you'd feel a lot better about it. I can say with absolute conviction that Keely should hold her head high, and I was glad to be a part of it. With almost no money, the people that volunteered their time and efforts are not ashamed, but rather glad that at last minute a albeit mellower version, something nice was created. Sometimes being able to apologize is the biggest most wonderful quality a human can have. I am wrong, often, but not on this one. Great job Keely and family/friends. Thank you for all the hard work.

Danielle, you can call City Hall and they will direct you to the correct people. These peopleRead More worked hard to plan this with what little money we have.

A California city will never prevail in a lawsuit against the STATE. All CA. cities must merge toRead More sue in mass under Federal RICO laws while we still have Federal laws. Filing alone at the State level is useless. Wake up people.
