Bowl for Boobies: Help Local Women With Breast Cancer

Tie up those bowling shoes and slam down a few pins during Busted Foundation's Bowling for Boobies. The nonprofit helps Los Angeles women battling breast cancer pay their medical bills.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and one way to support local women is Oct. 21 at Bowling for Boobies at Universal City Walk.

Glendale City Councilmember Mayor Laura Friedman works with the Busted Foundation's Bowling for Boobies after the organization, along with Soroptimists of the Verdugos, helped her during her battle with breast cancer.

"I was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer in 2006. I had insurance, but between my deducible and co-pay I still had over $8,000 in medical bills. At the time, I had just married and both my husband and I had recently started our own small businesses, so money was tight," Friedman told Patch.

Friedman is now on the advisory board of the Busted Foundation to help other women going through breast cancer treatment.

Ashley Largey is a brain cancer survivor and works as the Master Stylist at Frenchy's Beauty Parlor in Burbank. The Hollywood resident joined the Busted Foundation's Bowling for Boobies and aims to raise $2,000 before the Oct. 21 event.

"As a cancer survivor myself, I know just how awful the disease is, and having added financial strain makes matters so much worse," Largey told Patch.

Money raised by the Busted Foundation goes directly to the women who need it, she said.

"In an already stressful time in someone's life, to have to worry about things like paying for groceries or making sure the electricity stays on is exhausting. It's an awesome thing to be able to see immediate results from the money raised," Largey said.

There will be food, drinks, bowling and raffle items to raise money for the gals, she said. Frenchy's Beauty Parlor will have a pinup booth and Smashbox cosmetics will also have a photo booth.

Bowling for Boobies happens Oct. 21 from 5 to 10 p.m. at Jillian's Hi-Life Lanes, 1000 Universal Studios Blvd., Universal City Walk.

Tickets are $35 for VIP; $25 for general admission; and $15 for children under 18. Click here to purchase a ticket
