Fire Danger Level Increases in Angeles National Forest

Drier conditions are creating higher chances for forest fires.

Effective Friday, April 26, officials have raised the fire danger level from "moderate" to "high" in the Angeles National Forest.

A lack of significant winter rain combined with the amount of tall, dry grass has forced officials to make this decision. The new designation is meant to enhance public awareness of the increased danger for forest fires, officials said.

Moisture levels are decreasing, grasses at lower elevations have also started to cure earlier in the season and fire activity has also increased. The designation also factors in the fire fighting resources available, officials said.

Officials, however, have not implemented campfire restrictions. Open wood and charcoal fires are still allowed in approved "developed" campgrounds and picnic areas, while propane or jelled gas stoves and grills are permitted in non-developed areas with a valid California Campfire Permit.
