How to Recycle Your Christmas Tree

The city's trash collector will be picking up discarded trees until Jan. 13.

Christmas is over, but the season of recycling Christmas trees is just beginning.

From Monday until Jan. 13, residents can have their trees picked up by Athens Services by placing them on the curb on their normal trash collection day. After Jan. 13, residents can chop up the tree into smaller pieces and put them in the city's green waste barrels.

Flocked coated and fire retardant coated trees will be accepted for recycling, but ornaments, tinsel, plastic bags, nails, lights and stands need to be removed from the tree.
