Monrovia Seeks Residents Eager for a Challenge

The city is participating in the City of Hope's Foothill Fitness Challenging, a competition among local cities to see who can get healthier.

The city of Monrovia is looking for residents who are up for a challenge.

City of Hope is hosting the Foothill Fitness Challenge as part of a campaign to promote a healthier lifestyle that includes exercise and a good diet.

Foothill cities are forming competitive teams to see which community can make the biggest change during a three-month period.

The kick off for the challenge is Oct. 5.  Monrovia's team will be lead by Mayor Pro Tem Becky Shevlin and Councilman Larry Spicer. The goal is to have 50 or more join.

At the Monrovia City Council meeting on Tuesday, City Manager Laurie Lile gave a report on the event.

This marks City of Hope's centennial year and as part of that, the hospital is trying to reach out to the communities it serves.  The creation of the Foothill Fitness Challenge is a part of that effort,  Lile said.

City of Hope is calling on each community to sponsor a team and get active, she said.

Besides the upcoming kick off, the challenge will involve two other events, the Nov. 3 Walk for Hope and a science festival on Dec. 8.

The challenge is also a tool for the hospital to learn more about how a healthier lifestyle relates to disease prevention.

"What City of Hope is trying to do is really start getting enough people active and get enough information so they can start using that information to further their research on active lifestyles," Lile said.  "All of our collective work on this is going help City of Hope actually do more reserach in promoting disease avoidance through active lifestyles."

Mayor Mary Ann Lutz appealed to the city's pride in her pitch for residents to join, emphasizing that the challenge is a friendly competition between communities.

"I know that the Monrovians out there do not want one of our neighboring cities to have more people signed up and for those people to get more miles on their walking," she said. "We need to show the foothill communities that we are number one."
