In Theaters Now: Movies Playing This Weekend

We are two weekends from the Academy Awards. I can recommend to you something I have attended many times, save for the weekends that coincide with my nearly 7-year old granddaughter's birthday. This is a fabulous opportunity and tons of fun. It's a reasonable way to see all the best picture noms and makes watching the Academy Awards that much more enjoyable. You are allowed to come and go from the theatre between movies, and I had my best experiences when I saw them at the Westfield Santa Anita Mall because I could walk around between shows or grab a reasonable bite at the food court. I went so far as to look up show lengths at IMDB.com and mapped them in my phone so I knew what my options would be http://www.amctheatres.com/events/best-picture-showcase
That said, this is birthday weekend for the little one, and so I've seen 7 of the 9, either in the theatre or by renting them on iTunes and watching them on the iPad. I'm checking off Life of Pi this weekend, movie 8, but I need to find Amour, the foreign language film, and have struck out. If anyone knows where it's playing, I'd love to know. Currently, I have Flight on the iPad to catch Denzel's Performance for Best Actor. See next post.

So, there are two cool apps having to do with the Academy Awards. One is Oscars, which contains tons of info. A second one helps you to determine who is up for an Oscar, to check off what you've seen, what you want to see, and what you don't. I believe it's called Meet the Awards and is either free or 99 cents. It has been helpful in checking these off. And yes, thank you, I WAS born in Hollywood, LOL.

By the way, I hope Patch is going to do a mock Academy Awards campaign where we guess the winners of the various categories. No prizes, just the joy of guessing.

Update: I found Amour playing at the AMC in Covina for a limited period of time this weekend. It's French with English subtitles, but an excellent movie about an elderly couple and how they deal with her sudden, debilitating, and progressive illness. I wholeheartedly recommend it to those who can tolerate subtitles. The leading lady is up for best actress in the Academy Awards. She gave a stunning, compelling performance.
