Bears Break into Monrovia Home, Chow Down on Cat Food

Police say a mother bear and two cubs broke through the window of a local house on Tuesday afternoon.

A bear and two cubs broke into a Monrovia home Tuesday and had to be chased back into the forest by officers who fired bean bag rounds at them, police said.

The bears entered a house in the 800 block of Ridgeside Drive at 12:40 p.m. while no one was home, Monrovia Police Sgt. Dan Verna said. A neighbor notified police.

"A large bear broke through a window and entered the house with two of her cubs," Verna said. "They ate cat food that was out."

When officers arrived, they saw the bears exiting the home through the broken window, Verna said. They fired bean bag rounds at the bears and one struck the mother, he said.

The mother bear fled into the forest but the cubs were scared and climbed a nearby tree, Verna said. The mother returned when she realized the cubs hadn't followed her.

"When the mother bear realized her two cubs were up the tree she came back and stood guard at the base of a tree," he said.

Wardens were called from the Department of Fish and Game and the bears were eventually coaxed back into the wilderness without incident, Verna said.
