A first-alarm brush fire erupted in a hillside neighborhood of Duarte Thursday afternoon and firefighters are working to contain the blaze, a county fire official said.

The fire, which is burning in a riverbed near the 3200 block of Conata Street, has burned a quarter of an acre so far, Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman Keith Mora said.

"They're still working on it now," Mora said.

There is no indication as to what started the fire, which firefighters responded to at 1:27 p.m., Mora said. A total of five engines responded to the incident.
