City Council Dubs December 'Shop Monrovia Month'

With the holiday shopping season set to kick off after Thanksgiving, Monrovia officials want to remind residents to shop in town.

The Monrovia City Council last week proclaimed December "Shop Monrovia Month," something Councilman Tom Adams said the council does each year.

"It's more for the consumers at home to remind them of the value of keeping their dollars in Monrovia," Adams said.  "Sales tax is a very important part of out budget.  Every dollar we spend outside of town is a lost opportunity."

In 2010, city and business officials launched the "Think Monrovia" campaign, which had a them of "live, shop, thrive."

Karin Crehan, the Monrovia Chamber of Commerce's executive director," recalled when Adams brought up the idea for the campaign in 2010.  A committee was formed to come up with the details of the campaign and launch it.

Crehan urged residents to do their Christmas shopping in town and said that banners and yard signs are available to community members who want to help get the word out about the program.

"Please shop locally first," she said.  "If you can't find it here, you probably don't need it anyway."
