How to Green Up Your Family Home for Spring and Save!

It’s spring cleaning time in our home and gardens. Take advantage of these semi-annual plant sales and events throughout the region, where you will find low prices for top quality plants and flowers, as well as helpful advice from the master gardeners who care for them.


Enjoy two free seminars at our local Armstrong: “Tomatoes” on Saturday, April 9, 9 a.m. and “Container Veggies” on Saturday, April 16, 9 a.m., where you'll learn all about planting your own homegrown food. Don’t forget to sign up for an Armstrong rewards card for special savings when you shop.

Descanso Gardens
TOMATOMANIA! takes place Saturday-Sunday, April 2 - 3, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Descanso’s Magnolia Lawn. Choose from heirloom varieties, as well as standard and unusual tomatoes at the “world’s largest tomato seedling sale.” Tomato growing workshops take place both days 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Free with Gardens admission: $8 adults, $6 seniors/students, $3 children 5-12, free for children 4 and younger.

Descanso’s Spring Plant Sale is later in the month, Friday and Saturday, April 29 - 30, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lake House Nursery located outside the garden gates and is free of charge. Buy rooted cuttings from Descanso's Rose Garden, warm-weather lilacs developed at Descanso, and native and rare plants of all kinds.

The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens
The Huntington’s 37th Annual Spring Plant Sale is free and it’s happening Saturday - Sunday, May 14 - 15, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Saturday is the Members’ Preview Sale and Sunday is open to the public. You’ll find rare and unusual varieties of plants and vegetables you won’t find in nurseries.

Membership is also rewarding at The Huntington. Join or renew for two years at any membership level, save 10 percent and receive two additional months free. Membership makes a great gift too. Buy 4 memberships and get 1 free or buy 10 and get 3 free. Plus, show your member card at San Gabriel Nursery and Florist and get 10 percent off, and stay at the Langham Huntington Hotel and Spa for the special price of $199 per night.

The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanical Garden
The Spring Plant Sale comes to the Aboretum Saturday - Sunday, April 2-3, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Shop for 
berries, fruit trees, heirloom tomatoes, annuals, perennials, plants from the production nursery and greenhouse specimens, and botanical books and cookbooks from the library.

Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden
Learn all about the original plants of Southern California and their water-wise benefits at a free Native Plant Clinic Saturday, April 2, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lenz Horticulture Classroom in the Horticulture and Research Complex. Additional eminars take place monthly so check their calendar for future dates.
