Updated: Monrovia Albertson's Grocery Store to Close in February

Monrovia residents will soon have one less option for grocery shopping.

The city's Community Development Department has announced on its blog that the East Huntington Drive Albertson's will close in February.

"We've been following the news, so its not a complete surprise, but still we're sorry to see them leave Monrovia," staff wrote in the blog.

ABC7 reported that the Monrovia grocery store is one of 11 that will close by Feb. 20.

"While the decision to close a store is difficult -- given the impact on associates and customers -- Albertsons has a responsibility to do what is best for the long-term growth and success of the company as a whole," the company said in a statement the news station ran on its website.

The plan to shutter stores comes just days after Albertson's LLC announced that its parent company AB Acquisition LLC as purchasing Albertsons, ACME, Jewel-Osco, Shaw's and Star Market stores and related Osco and Sav-on in store pharmacies owned by the Minneapolis-based company SUPERVALU, Inc.

The purchase agreement included stocks, $100 million in cash, and the assumption of $3.2 billion in debt, according to the company's website.

Are you sorry to see Albertson's go? What would you like to see go in that spot once the grocery story leaves?
