New York Commissioner of Health Joins Kaiser Permanente Southern California

Dr. Nirav R. Shah will be responsible for ensuring high-quality care and service for more than 3.7 million Kaiser Permanente members in Southern California.

The New York state commissioner of health has joined Kaiser Permanente Southern California as senior vice president and chief operating officer for Clinical Operations, it was announced today.

Dr. Nirav R. Shah will be responsible for ensuring high-quality care and service for more than 3.7 million Kaiser Permanente members in Southern California.

"It is a privilege to join Kaiser Permanente, the national model of care for preserving and improving health," he said.

While Shah was New York's health commissioner, the public health agency created the New York State insurance exchange and administered the state's public health insurance programs, covering 5 million residents. The department also regulates hospitals and other health care facilities, conducts research, and supports public health and prevention initiatives.

At Kaiser, Shah "will be responsible for key programs that ensure the best outcomes and experiences for Kaiser Permanente members, including quality, service, nursing and the use of technology, data and analytics," according to the HMO.

He will work with the Southern California Permanente Medical Group to advance medical education and research, and will also oversee health plan and hospital accreditation, regulatory compliance and licensure.

Shah is board-certified in Internal Medicine and is an honors graduate of Harvard College and Yale School of Medicine. He was a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at UCLA.
