Old Town New Year's Eve Celebration Saw 40 Percent Spike in Attendance

Attendance at this year's New Year's Eve celebration in Old Town was up 40 percent, said business owner Pam Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick, representing the Old Town Merchants Association, gave a report on the event to the Monrovia City Council Tuesday night.

Old Town had 10,000 visitors at at the event's peak, she said.

"Our goal was two fold," she said, "to provide a fun, entertaining, safe place to be on New Year's Eve. But we're a business entity and it was (also) to show off our Old Town."

The area for children and families was popular, and the restaurants and stores that were open were packed," she said.

"One business owner said 'we do more business on New Year's Eve than we do any day of the year,'" she said.

Fitzpatrick said that the final figures have not been tallied yet, but the boost in attendance should mean more funds this year.

"No way we're not going to bring a chunk of change to the Merchant's Association," she said.
