Opening Date for Restaurant at Aztec Hotel Unclear

The Mayan Garden is under new management and the city hasn't been informed when it will start operating.

The opening of the restaurant at the Aztec Hotel appeared imminent last month until the ownership of the historic landmark replaced the manager, a city official said.

Craig Jimenez, Monrovia's principal planner, said the new manager hasn't announced an opening date for The Mayan Garden.

"They were close to opening and when the manager left I'm not quite sure what the status is," Jimenez said. "We haven't heard anything as far as what's going on with the restaurant."

The phone line at the hotel went unanswered Wednesday and its voicemail system was not working. The hotel is owned by Jiaming USA Inc.

Jimenez said the restaurant is in the process of obtaining a permit to build a separate women's restroom inside the restaurant. Patrons of the restaurant would have to use the hotel restroom presently, he said.

The hotel has already received a permit to replace the wall and fencing on the north side of the property with a single retaining wall, Jimenez said.
