The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) displayed a huge sign reading "Green Dot Cheats the Community" outside the local prepaid debit card company's corporate headquarters Friday as part of a labor dispute.
The union accuses Green Dot of hiring an electrician that does not provide pension or healthcare benefits to all its workers. The electrical company it hired--Nazzareno Electric--is working on a project the company is building in Pasadena, according to a flyer distributed by the IBEW.
"IBEW Local 11 believes that Green Dot has an obligation to the community to see that area labor standards are met for construction work at all their projects, including their future work," the flyer states. "They should not be allowed to insulate themselves behind 'independent' contractors."
The IBEW flyer lists the phone number of Green Dot's CEO, Steve Streit, and asks people to call him and ask him "to do all he can to change this situation..."
Green Dot could not immediately be reached for comment and a voicemail box for the company's spokeswoman was not operating Friday morning. A message left with Rick Nazzareno, the owner of Nazzareno Electric, was not immediately returned.
