Photos: Monrovia Remembers Heroes of Sept. 11

The fire department unveiled a bronze statue at the memorial honoring those who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks.

Local officials and dignitaries gathered for a ceremony Sunday at on the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, unveiling those who lost their lives a decade ago.

“We wanted to pay tribute to the citizens, firefighters, police officers and emergency service workers that made the ultimate sacrifice that day,” said Fire Chief Chris Donovan.

The ceremony included a presentation of the colors by members of the Explorers, the trumpeting of the National Anthem by city employee Kathy Ryan and comments from Donovan, Police Chief Jim Hunt and Mayor Mary Ann Lutz. Felicia Lay of the city’s Youth Commission read a Sept. 11 tribute poem.

“This ceremony also gives us the opportunity to unveil a beautiful, bronze firefighter statue that was donated by the Hoffman family as a tribute to Sept. 11,” Donovan said.

The statue, which depicts a firefighter with an angel on his shoulder, will occupy a permanent space in front of Fire Station 101 on Lemon Avenue.
