YMCA Challenges City Council and Monrovians to Have a 'Soda Free Summer'

Members of the City Council promise not to drink soda this summer and Monrovia residents are urged to do the same.

Members of the Monrovia City Council pledged to stay "soda free" for the next three months as part of a campaign to promote healthy living launched by the Santa Anita Family YMCA.

The council issued a proclamation declaring June, July and August a "Soda Free Summer" at its regular meeting Tuesday. More than 50 percent of Monrovia, Arcadia and Duarte residents are overweight or obese, according to the proclamation read by Mayor Mary Ann Lutz.

YMCA board member Darrell Brooke led the council and members of the audience in a pledge to stay soda free.

"You have to adopt a diet that's going to be healthy and increases your lifespan," Brooke said.

The Monrovia Youth Commission and Teen Advisory Board are each participating in the campaign as well.
