Auditions for Fall Season - San Gabriel Valley Choral Company (Monrovia)

San Gabriel Valley Choral Company 2013-2014 Season






The San Gabriel Valley Choral Company (SGVCC) invites singers to audition for its upcoming season. Highlights of the 2013-2014 season include Mozart’s Requiem, Ramirez’s Misa Criolla, Gilbert & Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance, and a performance at the historic Aztec Hotel in Monrovia. Auditions will be held August 16 through September 24. Interested singers should request an audition by contacting Chris Breese at cbbreese@gmail.com or (626) 253-7248.

 

Auditions will be held Tuesday and Friday evenings between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Monrovia. The 10-minute audition will consist of a short classical solo selection or excerpt and a brief musicianship assessment. An accompanist will be provided. Please include complete contact information and a description of previous choral music experience when contacting Ms. Breese. Rehearsals are held Tuesday evenings in Monrovia, beginning August 27.

A highlight of the SGVCC’s upcoming season is a supernatural evening in the stunning ambiance of the historic Aztec Hotel in Monrovia, featuring selections from Mozart’s Requiem; “Sure on this Shining Night” by Lauridsen; “Der Feuerreiter” by Wolf; and works by Gibbs, Mäntyjärvi, Strimple, Orbán, and Houston. Featured works in other concerts include Misa Criolla by Ariel Ramirez and “Romancero Gitano” by Mario Castelnuovo Tedesco, along with music of Piazzola, Estevez, Casals, Stroope, Rutter, Basler, and Baker. The SGVCC will conclude its season with an abridged, semi-staged version of the classic Gilbert and Sullivan comic operetta Pirates of Penzance.

Artistic Director Zanaida Robles is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Music at the University of Southern California (USC). As a DMA Teaching Assistant at USC, she conducted the USC Thornton University Chorus for two years. Prior to commencing her doctoral studies, Ms. Robles served for five years as director classical choirs at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA). She remains on faculty at LACHSA as instructor of vocal fundamentals while completing her doctoral studies at USC. Ms. Robles has prepared choirs for performances with such artists as Josh Groban, Kristin Chenoweth, Audra McDonald and Wayne Brady.

 

Founded in 1995 by Dr. Thomas M. Miyake of California State University, Los Angeles, the SGVCC is a non-profit choir based in Monrovia, CA. The group’s repertoire has included music from the Renaissance period to recent works of the 21st century. Along with more traditional selections, music performed has featured avant-garde, jazz, gospel, Broadway musical revues, and staged productions.
