Patch Blog: Be There For Someone

A story of what it means to live in community.

A family member has been "going through it" as they say.  We have worked very hard to build our relationship to be a close bond over the years.  I have come to cherish the fact that when my phone displays their name and photo it means something to my heart today.

I had been preparing to paint the kitchen cabinets at the "new" house yesterday when the phone did ring.

"Can you come help me today?"

I dropped everything and was there.  All day.  It was one of the longest days I have had in a long time.  Yet, my heart was so full. I was overcome this morning, on my birthday, with the gravity of being available for someone I love so very much in a time of need.  The privilege of getting to be the person that is trusted with the hard times.

In today's times of difficulty, it struck me that we all could use those relationships.  We all need to have people in our lives that we call to just be with us.  To sit or work beside us when life is too much to bear alone.  It is so vital to our human condition to share our lives with trusted individuals.  To have a sense of community with others.  To live in concert with people.

I hope you get to be the person to be there for someone someday.  It is truly the single most rewarding moment of one's life.  Whether it is a child, parent or sibling.  I would hope this little story encourages all to reach out to those that are important and foster those relationships.  People matter.
