Hold 'n' Hands Help 'n' Hearts

Paint n Play 2 Art Studio & Gallery gives back to the community with legacy handprints for cancer patients.

When I had arrived to the San Gabriel Valley, it was a transitional time in my life.  I stumbled upon this little art studio, , with a friend.  We were sitting there with our projects and I realized what a very special environment this truly was for anyone that passed through the double doors from Myrtle Avenue.

Two years I sat next to Art Director, Rachel Quimayousie and glazed.  We solved the worlds’ problems, our problems and kibbutz.  I gleaned from Owner, Lisa Barrios the value of placing a person’s experience with one's business above the latest and greatest accessory.  These sisters took their values, goals and vision that have kept Paint n Play2 as an art destination for all ages and turned it into an outreach for cancer patients.

Hold ‘n’ Hands Help ‘n’ Hearts is the non-profit vein of Paint n Play2.  Most folks do not realize that the small console table tucked back in the corner near the kiln room holds two or three legacy hand print pieces and printed materials related to the people who have either passed or were extremely ill when those impressions were made.

Rachel and Lisa have always endeavored to put a personal touch into every impression that comes from their studio so these projects carry the distinct interests of the folks whose hand they bear as well.  The difference is that the stories behind those beautiful pieces will bring a tear to the eyes of Lisa, Rachel and the listener when heard.

I will never forget when I personally heard of the family that had a baby with a severe birth defect.  The baby’s impression was taken by Lisa and that sweet, innocent child passed only a few short hours following its birth.  The family had little in the way of tangible items to recall that child, save for the legacy piece Paint n Play2 had made and some photographs.  I still get teary remembering that couple came in to the studio on the anniversary of their child’s passing to thank Lisa personally for the saved memory of the very special ceramic piece.  I cried with Lisa afterwards.  That couple was just so precious.

This program started as a favor to an employee of City of Hope in the neuro-oncology department and is now a thriving 501 3c.  It is supported by “pennies from heaven” as Lisa likes to say, so donations are always welcomed.  Anyone that is familiar with Paint n Play2 and its staff is well aware of the warm, fuzzy feelings that flow freely in this wonderful creative space.  This spirit of love and goodwill continues to pass to Hold ‘n’ Hands Help ‘n’ Hearts through generous donations of citizens and families that care about the memories of loved ones.
