A Mom Talks to Ed Gililland

Blogger Holly Hale speaks with school board candidate Ed Gililland.

Mr. Gililland has served the School Board for several years now and is running for re-election. In a brief phone interview he answered several questions for me and also invited anyone who wishes to learn more to an Open House, Tuesday evening, Oct. 25 @ 5:30pm at his home. 323 North Primrose Ave.

Mr. Gililland clarified the budget for MUSD is about 80% salaries and benefits with 20% earmarked for supplies, electricity and other necessities. With further budget cuts coming down the pike it won't just be "Trimming the fat but cutting on the bone, as well."

I asked about the IPAD rumor which was answered honestly. The district is looking into how to better utilize technology to further the education of our students and prepare them for the global economy. While IPADs are technology, should the district reach a point where "pads" will be adopted, they may not necessarily be IPADs and insurance is a factor in the choice.

Since the musical RENT was an issue in the discussion with another candidate, Mr. Gililland explained the decision behind the nixing of it. Students from young freshmen to the more mature seniors would be involved in the performance. The show is dark (for those who have not seen it, it deals with topics ranging from drug addiction to HIV) and therefore, may not be appropriate for younger students.

Mr. Gililland stands behind his record with the district and his dedication to the community. He fully supports our principals and the strides our schools have made of the past few years. On a personal level, I found him to be warm and sincere in his desire to provide the best for our students.
