City Will Honor Monrovia Olympian Kim Rhode on Sunday

A special ceremony is planned Sunday for Monrovia Olympian Kim Rhode, who won a gold medal in London while setting records in the process.

The city of Monrovia will host a special ceremony Sunday to recognize Monrovia Olympian Kim Rhode for her record setting achievements at the London Games.

Rhode, who and set a U.S. record by becoming the first athlete to win a medal in five consecutive Olympics, will be honored in Library Park at 6:15 p.m.

"The Olympic Games are a spectacle all on their own, but to be able to watch one of our residents excel on that stage is truly heartwarming and inspirational," Mayor Mary Ann Lutz said in a written statement. "We look forward to publically welcoming her home and letting her fellow Monrovians congratulate her on her accomplishments."

Rhode will be available for photos and autographs after the ceremony, according to a city news release.
