Monroe School Raising 'Green' through Spring Cleaning

Monroe Elementary School: raising a little 'green'

With all the recent buzz about severe budget cuts to the MUSD budget as well as the 'lively' discussions regarding fundraising by local schools, it is a pleasure to tell everyone about a fundrasing effort being undertaken this week by Monroe School...It's called a "Spring Cleaning Fundraiser."

Here's how it works: Monroe accepts donations of gently used clothing, shoes, accessories (like belts, purses, wallets, tote bags and such) along with household linens, pillows and stuffed toys as well as small indoor toys, bicycles and bike helmets over the course of this week and weekend.  A socially-conscious, green company picks up the donations, weighs them and gives the PTA money-per-pound for everything collected.  The company then recycles the items.  How simple is that??  Many Monroe families who have donated in the first few days of this fundraiser said that they have been wanting to go through their closets and garages and this gives them the excuse to finally get around to it!

Here's what drew the Monroe PTA to this type of fundraiser:

In addition to the ease in running this fundraiser, it benefits the environment.  According to the EPA, the recycling industry prevents 2.5 billion pounds of textile waste from entering landfills every year. More than 1,000 businesses and organizations employ many tens of thousands of workers to divert some 2,000,000 tons of textile waste from the solid stream!

Making money while helping the environment PLUS no sellling or expenses or expenses PLUS more room in your closets and garage...sounds like a WIN for everyone!
