Television Travel Host Huell Howser Dead at 67

The public television travel host explored sites in California, including several spots in Monrovia.

Huell Howser, who showcased the sites of California, including small towns and off-the-beaten-path locations, in his public television show “California’s Gold” died Monday, according to OC Weekly.

Howser, 67, a native of Gallatin, Tenn., was a reporter in Los Angeles before joining KCET. He retired from broadcasting unexpectedly last year in November.

Howser interviewed Monrovia resident and whistling champion Carole Anne Kaufman in 2010 and stopped by the Wizard of Bras on Myrtle Avenue the same year.

Details of his death were not immediately available.

What a loss. This man was second to non. He was REAL . We have lost "gold" in its purest form. So sad. We should set up a candle call at Wizard of Bras location. This man can not pass without a thank you from those who cherish the real California' Gold. RIP Huell Howser.

I learned of Huell's passing during the lunch hour at work. I saw a breaking news alert, read it, and let out with an "Oh, NO!" that could be heard at least 3 aisles away. Felt like I had been punched in the gut or that I'd just lost a favorite cousin who could tell the best stories. I learned so much from watching his shows and taped as many as I could, making the time to watch them, sometimes in the middle of the night. He took me to places I had been, and to places I had never been and are bucket listed. I learned history and quirky things from him. One of them is the one he did on the Aztec Hotel. If I had a $1 for every time the lady owner of the Aztec said "Absolutely" to Huell, I would be a rich woman. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Howser at a charitable function in the 90s. He was just as he was on tv. Earthy, warm, and a huge grin. To me, he was a sociologist and taught us the culture and lore of days just past the horizon. I have long felt that every library should have a set of his mission videos. Thank you, Huell, for the memories!

Huell is the only man on earth who could pull off an interview about the history of bras and make guys pay attention. This video is gold to the City of Monrovia. Just hearing his pronounce our city's name is gold. The way he says Wizard of Bras weakens a guys knees. Gayle my son does a spot on voice impression as well. I suspect that he will greet me with something from Huell the next time see him.

I did the same thing. Had just finished watching "Parental Consent" with hubby and Mom when the news came on my iPhone. Yelled out the same as you, couldn't believe it!!! Just like losing a family member, he was so much a part of our lives. Still hard to believe. So glad his shows will live on though at Chapman online.
