As Fire Rages, Black Bear Spotted on Highland Place

The bear was last seen heading back toward the hillside.

Monrovia residents are not the only ones being evacuated from their homes on Saturday due to the 90-acre brush fire burning through Monrovia's hillside.

According to scanner activity, a black bear was seen wandering through the neighborhood near the intersection of Highland and Franklin Places.

Lieutenant Nels Ortlund said the bear was last seen heading back toward the hillside.

Mandatory evacuations have been ordered for the following hillside neighborhoods: Heather Heights, Alta Vista Avenue, Melrose Avenue, Magnolia Avenue, Patricia Way, Hidden Valley Drive, Mesa Circle and Sky Way. Traffic is closed above Foothill Boulevard.
