Car Thief Escapes Area Police Monday

A car thief escaped after a 28-second vehicle pursuit and a 35-minute search, police said Tuesday.

A police officer noticed the stolen 1990 Acura near the intersection of Sixth and Live Oak Avenues in Arcadia around 10:25 p.m. Monday, said Arcadia police Lt. Mike Castro.

The vehicle, which had been reported stolen in El Monte, was followed to Elrovia Avenue in El Monte as the officer waited for backup, Castro said, adding that an attempt was made to pull the vehicle over when other police vehicles arrived.

The driver accelerated as officers gave chase, Castro said, a process that lasted from 10:32.02  to 10:32.30. It ended when the suspect locked the brakes of the vehicle at the intersection of Elrovia and Lambert avenues.

The driver jumped out of the car and officers lost sight of him, Castro said. A 35-minute search of the area was unsuccessful, he said.
