Carport Fire Destroys Eight Cars in Monrovia

A malfunction in one of the parked vehicles sparked the fire, according to the Monrovia Fire Department.

Eight cars were completely destroyed in a carport fire Saturday morning in Monrovia, fire officials said.

The blaze at the detached carport of an apartment building at 810 W. Duarte Road was reported at 8:30 a.m., Chief Chris Fabrizio of the Monrovia Fire Department said.

Twenty-nine firefighters extinguished the fire in about 40 minutes and prevented flames from spreading to the nearby apartment structure, Fabrizio said.

A malfunction in one of the parked vehicles sparked the fire, which Fabrizio described as intense.

"Most of the (vehicles) were virtually melted to the ground," he said.
