Community Members Plan to Host Peace Rally at Duarte High Saturday

Community members from Duarte, Monrovia, and the Los Angeles County areas surrounding those cities plan to come together Saturday to rally against a recent rash of shootings.

The event, which kicks off at 11 a.m. at Duarte High School, has been dubbed the "Enough is Enough Peace Rally." Johnnie Lee Youngblood, a Duarte High alum, is spearheading the effort.

A Facebook evite for the event has its message set at "Coming together to stop the violence in Monrovia/Duarte and show this generation all races can co exist peacefully!"

Representatives from local churches, as well as law enforcement officials plan to speak at the event, according to organizers.

The event is open to the public.

The first of the three Duarte shootings took place about 12:30 a.m. Dec. 22 Eighteen-year-old Malcom Mency was gunned down and died in the 2000 block of Broderick Avenue, Grubb said. The father of a one-month-old son had walked home after working a shift at a nearby Sonic Drive-In.
  
Around 3 p.m. that same day, an unidentified man was wounded by a shot to the lower back on his front yard in the Mt. Olive Drive and Bloomfield Street area. His current condition was unknown.

A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed in Duarte on Dec. 23 in what authorities have said appeared to be a gang-related shooting.
  
The teenager was shot in the 2500 block of Huntington Drive around 11:45 p.m. said Deputy Benjamin Grubb of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
