Couple Shot in Front Seat of Car in Area Attack

Simon Mendoza, of Whittier, was struck several times in the chest and died at the scene. The female victim was also struck and suffered minor injuries.

A man was killed and a woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries Saturday when both were shot as they sat in the front seat of a car in El Monte.

An unidentified suspect approached the vehicle on foot at 12:30 a.m. and fired multiple times at both victims, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Deputy Quiana Birkbeck said.

The male victim—identified by a coroner's investigator as 40-year-old Simon Mendoza of Whittier—was struck several times in the chest and died at the scene, Birkbeck said. The female victim was also struck and suffered minor injuries.

The shooting occurred in the 11300 block of Medina Court, a dead-end street that runs off Peck Road.
