The investigation into a crash on the 220 freeway that injured seven did not turn up any evidence of reckless or high speed driving, as was originally reported by the CHP, according to the Pasadena Star News.

The collision, which occurred just after 5 a.m. Saturday, happened when a Volkswagen Jetta driven by an Ontario man became disabled in the carpool lane due to a tire issue, the newspaper reported.

A passenger in the Jetta, a 21-year-old El Monte man, got out of the car and was standing in front of it when the Jetta was hit from behind by a Toyota Camry. The crash caused the Jetta to lurch forward and strike the El Monte man, the newspaper reported.  He suffered cuts to his face and other injuries but was alert when he was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.

The driver of the Jetta, who suffered minor injuries, was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, although his allegedly being under the influence was not believed to have played a role in the collision, the newspaper reported.

The Camry contained a family of five from Cathedral City. The male driver and his wife suffered minor injuries. The couple's two daughters, 17 and 24, suffered moderate injuries, and a son, 8, minor injuries.

A two-vehicle crash on the Foothill (210) Freeway in Monrovia Saturday sent seven people to hospitals, including a family of five, and temporarily shut down freeway lanes.

The crash took place just east of Huntington on the westbound 210 Freeway just after 5 a.m., said California Highway Patrol Officer Patrick Kimball.

Two people were reported as unconscious at the scene, Kimball said.

Initial reports from witnesses indicated that one of the two vehicles was going more than 100 miles per hour before it swerved to avoid a disabled car and crashed, according to CHP Officer Ed Jacobs.

A total of seven people were hospitalized. Among the injured were a family including a mother, father and three children. Their conditions were unknown, Jacobs said.

The crash shut down all westbound lanes and a SigAlert was declared at 6:10 a.m., Kimball said. All lanes were cleared at 6:38 a.m., he added.

The crash remained under investigation.
