D.A. Issues Warning About 'Robo-Call' Bank Scam

In the scam, recorded messages pretending to represent major banks ask consumers to verify their personal bank information.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley has issued a warning against recorded messages designed to trick consumers into giving up personal banking information such as PINs, credit and debit card numbers. The messages, or "robo-calls", claim to represent major banks, according to a release from the District Attorney's office.

The method of the scam is telling the consumer of a supposed issue with the banking network, and that verification of personal banking information is required.

"Consumers need to be extremely wary of telephone calls requesting sensitive information about banking or credit cards," Cooley said in the release. "Legitimate banks and financial institutions do not call their customers to request personal identifying information or discuss banking network problems."
