Lost Angeles Forest Hiker Found

Local search and rescue located a backpacker Monday afternoon who was supposed to be home on Saturday night.

Local search and rescue teams found a hiker Monday afternoon in the Angeles National Forest who had been missing since Saturday evening, according to Lt. Michael White of the the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The hiker, who authorites said was a man around 30 years old, was on a three-day, 50-mile hike along the Pacific Crest Trail that was meant to end in Chantry Flats, a hiking area above Arcadia, according to Bruce Lamarche of the .

The search started Sunday in the Chantry Flats area above Arcadia, after family members of the hiker contacted the authorities, according to Lt. Angela Shepherd of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Teams then expanded the search after not finding him near the area.

Lt. White said the hiker was found off-course of where he had intended to hike, though he was uncertain of exactly where the hiker was located.  Lamarche said that the search had been centered in the Chilao Flats area.

Sierra Madre Search and Rescue was the lead agency for the search, but county teams, including Altadena and Montrose, are now involved after the initial search near Chantry Flats failed to turn up the hiker.

Lamarche said rescue crews were able to follow the footprints of the hiker and track him.
