UPDATE: Manhunt Ensues After Suspect Runs During Traffic Stop

Police pulled over a car on Foothill Boulevard Friday night and the driver got out and started running.

Monrovia Police called in a helicopter to aid in the search for a man who ran away from police after he was pulled over in a traffic stop Friday night.

Police stopped the car for a vehicle code violation near the intersection of Foothill Boulevard and Shamrock Avenue before 9 p.m., according to Monrovia Police Sgt. Tom Loy.

The suspect then got out of the car and ran, Loy said. After an extensive search of the area, police were unable to locate him.

Two women were in the car but they refused to tell officers who the man was, Loy said.

"They were not being cooperative," Loy said, noting that officers could not compel the women to be forthcoming. "We can't charge them for not telling us who he is."

The car belongs to one of the women, a Glendora resident, he said.

Witnesses said on Facebook that they saw police officers with their guns drawn and pointed at the stopped vehicle.

I saw the officer with his gun drawn and it appeared that a female passenger was being detained as she was off to the far right in cuffs, standing with another officer. We drove by later and saw that she had been released and was pulling items from the trunk. Big production here in M town.

Seems that this guy likely had a warrant for his arrest so he bailed and hoped to get away from a sure arrest. Looks that he was successful. Apparently since the guy did not violate any vehicle code, the girls cannot be charged for not giving up info on a person who did not commit a violation.

I saw this too. I was coming east on Foothill off of Moutain and heading for the right lane since bike riders are usually off the road by then and I have to make a right turn. But I saw the lights flashing on Foothill and saw a newer model small silver car pulled over by the cops. I thought somebody is having a bad day. But, as I continued to drive further west, one of the northbound streets about two blocks away was blocked off by two cop cars. It was the stuff movies are made of.

"The car belongs to one of the women....". Shouldn't that be "belonged", past tense? Or is there also no reason to impound the car? It seems strange that there should be no consequences for their - the escaped driver and his companions - actions.

I was just leave 24HR Fitness when a cop car flew past me up Shamrock doing at least 60 mph, then another car flew by going about as fast as the first one. I thought an armed robbery or something worse was in progress with the way they were driving up Shamrock which is also a residential neighborhood. My curiosity got the best of me so I drove north on Shamrock and saw a tall blond woman exiting the car at gun point. I am a little surprised, I have to say, with the amount of urgent attention given to this by the mpd, simply because some anonymous guy bolted from the traffic stop.

A lot of police officers are killed or injured during foot pursuits. Police take it serious until they find out why the guy was running.

Steve L: I thought the sad events of the last few weeks would have kinda illustrated that police officers never know what exactly they are getting into. The guy bolting from the car could have been a wanted killer or a newspaper delivery woman. Most folks don't run when getting traffic tickets, so why would you not treat it as the worst case potential?
