Monrovia Gang Member Faces Sentencing for Paralyzing Teen

Jimmy Santana, who was convicted of paralyzing a local teen in a drive-by shooting in 2008, is scheduled to be sentenced Monday morning.

The Monrovia Nuevo Varrio (MNV)mgang member who paralyzed a 16-year-old boy in a 2008 drive-by shooting is scheduled to be sentenced at the Alhambra Superior Courthouse Monday morning.

Jimmy Santana, 23, was convicted of attempted murder in February for shooting and paralyzing a teenager while he rode his bicycle in the 2500 block of Peck Road in unincorporated Monrovia on Jan. 29, 2008, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

Prosecutors said Santana was a known member of MNV, one of two street gangs in Monrovia that city officials obtained a gang injunction against. The two gangs engaged in back-and-forth shootings in Monrovia in late 2007 and early 2008 .

Santana yelled out a gang-related statement before opening fire, prosecutors said. He was also convicted of shooting a firearm from a moving vehicle, assault with a firearm, and intentionally discharging a firearm to cause great bodily injury.

Santana tried to switch attorneys in a sentencing hearing in May, but Judge Candace Beason denied his request. Santana's family members are expected to address the court Monday, according to Beason.
