Monrovia Police Accept State Award in Sacramento
The department received the James Q. Wilson Award for embracing a community-based approach to law enforcement.
A delegation of Monrovia Police Department officers and city officials traveled to Sacramento last week to receive the James Q. Wilson award, a state honor given to a local department that effectively employs community based policing.
Monrovia police instituted community policing in the department in 1991 and have since touted programs like Chaplains for At-Risk Youth (CARY), the Monrovia Anti-Gang Intervention Committee (MAGIC), the Duarte and Monrovia Anti-Gang Enforcement (DAMAGE), and the Formative Years Program.
The delegation included Police Chief Jim Hunt, Councilman Larry Spicer, Lt. Mike Lee, Police Chaplain Terrence Brown, and School District Representative Susan Hirsch. The Citrus Heights Police Department and the Riverside Sheriff's Department also received the award.
