Updated: Pair of Accidents on 210 Freeway Kills One, Shuts Down Part of Gold Line

One person was killed and two others injured in an underground six-vehicle crash on the eastbound Foothill (210) Freeway in Pasadena early today, and a second motorist was killed on the same freeway less than three hours later.

Three big rigs and three other vehicles were involved in the first wreck, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Alex Rubio, who said a 50- year-old man died at the scene.

A Pasadena Fire Department commander told a videographer that the fatally injured man, who was not immediately identified, was the driver of a big rig that jackknifed, with the cab and trailer separating.

The accident occurred around 12:10 a.m. on the two-lane underground transition from the eastbound 210 to the eastbound Ventura (134) Freeway, resulting in the closure of the eastbound 210. Traffic was diverted to the westbound 134, Rubio said.

A second big rig fatality, reported at 2:57 a.m. about four miles east on the eastbound 210, prompted the closure of the Metro Gold Line between Pasadena's Allen and Sierra Madre Villa stations, Metro spokeswoman Kim Upton said.

Debris from the second accident, in which a big rig struck the freeway center divider, killing a 33-year-old truck driver from Moreno Valley, littered the adjoining Gold Line tracks, which run down the center of the freeway. Both the body and the big rig's trailer ended up on the track, according to the CHP.

Rail service between the two stations, which normally starts at 4:30 a.m. was stopped, and trains were replaced by a bus bridge to help Gold Line passengers around the shuttered stretch of track. Service was being restored late this morning, with some delays expected, Metro reported.
