Parolee Shot in Duarte

The parolee pulled a knife on the corrections officer who shot him, authorities say.

A Department of Corrections officer shot a 20-year-old parolee who allegedly pulled a knife on an undercover agent Friday afternoon.

The officer-involved shooting was reported at 2:22 p.m. in the 1900
block of Huntington Drive in Duarte. Samuel Castro was hospitalized in serious condition and was undergoing surgery tonight, according to Luis Patino of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Castro's parole was suspended Wednesday when he did not report to his
parole agent, Patino said.

"Parole agents were attempting to arrest (Castro) ... when he pulled a
knife and threatened one of the agents,'' Patino said. "The agent shot the
parole violator."

No agents or officers were injured in the shooting. Castro served time at Corcoran State Prison for assault with a deadly weapon with great bodily injury, according to Patino.
