Detectives from LAPD Northeast's Gang Unit are investigating the shooting of a man believed to be affiliated with a gang that took place on Fayette Street on Tuesday, Nov. 20.
According to Gang Unit Detective Ricard Ortiz, the shooting took place on Tuesday at around 9:30 p.m. near the 5600 block of Fayette St. following a dispute between the victim, who police believe to be associated with a gang in the Hollenbeck area, and his neighbor.
Ortiz said that a third person came to the defense of the victim's neighbor, shooting him once in the hand and grazing the area under his armpit with another shot.
"The victim got lucky with that shot," Ortiz said.
The investigation has stalled due to the unwillingness of both the neighbor and the victim to cooperate with officers.
"Nobody wants to tell us who the shooter is," Ortiz said. "We're investigating this crime as gang-related, but whether or not we solve it is based on the cooperation we get."
Police officers note that witnesses and victims are often hesitant to cooperate in investigations due to fear of retaliation by local gangs.
