(UPDATE) Reminder: Fireworks Are Illegal in Monrovia

All fireworks, even the "safe and sane" variety, are prohibited in much of Los Angeles County.

With Fourth of July less than a week away, Supervisor Michael Antonovich is reminding residents that though fireworks may be spectacular to look at, they are illegal in Monrovia and in much of Los Angeles County.

“While some cities allow 'safe and sane' fireworks, fireworks, of any kind, are illegal in Los Angeles County,” said Antonovich in a statement. Despite Antonovich's comments, some places, such as Duarte, allow fireworks sales. But they are banned completely in Monrovia.

People using or in possession of fireworks in county unincorporated areas can be punished with a fine of up to $1,000 or one year in county jail. Parents can be held responsible for any damage or injuries caused by their children's firework use.

Fireworks become increasingly dangerous during dry summer conditions. Temperatures are expected to reach the 90s over the weekend according to Patch's weatherbug, which will only make for even dryer environmental conditions that are especially susceptible to fires.

“With fire season upon us, it is vital that our County residents understand that fireworks can cause brush fires, house fires, millions of dollars in damages, injuries and even death,” said Antonovich in a statement. “Our firefighters risk their lives protecting lives and property--they deserve our help in preventing further fire emergencies.”

Antonovich is also reminding residents that m-80s and m-100s are an entirely different class of fireworks that are considered explosives. Possession of these can result in felony charges with a punishment of up to 16 months in state prison.

If you spot anyone using fireworks illegally, Antonovich urges you to contact the police.

To enjoy fireworks in Monrovia on the fourth, head over to at 9 p.m. The show will be put on by Pyrospectaculars by Souza, the same company that has long handled Independence Day pyrotechnics at the Rose Bowl.

Before the fireworks show, a concert will be held in the park at 7 p.m. For more information, click here.

Clarification: A previous version of this story stated that fireworks are illegal in LA County. They are illegal in unincorporated areas of LA County and in many cities in the county, including Monrovia.
