Teen Murdered In Third Duarte Shooting

From City News Service

A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed in Duarte in the third shooting in the community in three days, authorities said today.

The teenager was shot in the 2500 block of Huntington Drive around 11:45 p.m. Monday, said Deputy Benjamin Grubb of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Residents of the building and family members told deputies they heard gunshots and ran out to investigate what happened, sheriff's Lt. John Corina said. That was when they discovered the boy lying at the rear of the apartment complex suffering from gunshot wounds.

Paramedics were dispatched to the scene, where the victim was pronounced dead. He lived with his parents in the apartment complex, Corina said.

Sheriff's officials said the boy was affiliated with a street gang, and the shooting may have been gang-related.

The first of the three Duarte shootings took place about 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Eighteen-year-old Malcom Mency was gunned down and died in the 2000 block of Broderick Avenue, Grubb said. The father of a one-month-old son had walked home after working a shift at a nearby Sonic Drive-In.

Around 3 p.m. that same day, an unidentified man was wounded by a shot to the lower back on his front yard in the Mt. Olive Drive and Bloomfield Street area. His current condition was unknown.

Anyone with information about any of these cases was urged to call homicide detectives at (323) 890-5500. Tipsters can also call (800) 222-TIPS (8477) or sending an email to lacrimestoppers.org. All tips can be made anonymously.
