83,000 Foothill, San Gabriel Locals Remain Without Power

Southern California Edison has prepared distribution centers throughout Los Angeles County for emergency supplies. A timeline for power restoration remains unknown.

About 83,000 Southern California Edison customers remain without power in the foothills and San Gabriel Valley communities.

Power was restored about 3 p.m. Friday for many Southern California Edison customers in Montrose and La Crescenta, according to a sheriff’s deputy at the Crescenta Valley Station. The only reported outage were streetlights as of 1 p.m. Saturday.

Southern California Edison spokesman Gil Alexander could not give an exact number of how many residents are without power in La Crescenta and Montrose.

“The operations center is extremely busy right now dispatching crews and we’re not able to do that type of pin-point research,” Alexander told Patch.

“It appears to be a challenging situation for our crews in several communities,” Alexander said.

For example, Arcadia has a three-mile stretch with more than 100 trees down, affecting the circuits, Alexander said.

“It’s a process of clearing the area, assessing the damage,” Alexander said. “There’s nothing nearly important at this moment is safety message.”

Alexander urged people with downed trees to stay inside and not touch anything until power is restored.

Locals without power are encouraged to visit one of the Southern California Edison distribution centers for supplies and emergency equipment from noon to 4 p.m. at several locations in La Cañada Flintridge, Altadena, Arcadia, Sierra Madre, San Gabriel and Temple City. These locations and further safety tips are available on Edison’s website.

Tree Disposal Service:

Los Angeles County Public Works Department and the Department of Parks & Recreation offer a free disposal service to residents of the unincorporated communities, according to an announcement from Los Angeles County Mayor Michael D. Antonovich.

Locals can take tree, plant debris to at 3901 Dunsmore Ave., La Crescenta. Allied Waste Services will collect the waste Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. To contact Allied Waste Services, call (888) 742-5234.

Officials urge residents to keep using large green waste bins for smaller tree debris, Antonovich said. Locals can also contact waste haulers to arrange pick-up of additional excess tree debris on the regular trash collection day.

For further information, residents of county unincorporated communities can also call the county’s trash collection hotline at (800) 993-5844.

Wow. There are still lots of houses out our way near Temple CIty/Arcadia that don't have power. It's incredible...

Nice story, but focuses solely on the Montrose/La Crescenta folks. Why? Dear Monrovia Patch, do you have ANY news to report about THIS area---- Monrovia, Arcadia, Sierra Madre?

Monrovia Canyon Park staff and volunteers spent the day Saturday cutting up fallen trees and removing debris from streets.

Our power was restored this afternoon at 4:15 and I'm so very thankful but my heart goes out to the 39,000 who are still without and to the Edison crews that have to deal with all the complexities. What a mess this all is. We should all remember that, if we think going for a few days with electricity is an inconvenience, imagine what it will be like after a big quake when we have no electricity, no water and no gas. Yikes! After I clean out and wash down the fridge tomorrow, I'm going to go through my quake kit.
