Antonovich Calls Brown's Prison Solution 'Dangerous'

Is Gov. Jerry Brown's plan to end prison privatization and release inmates early a good one? Monrovia's Supervisor doesn't think so.

Gov. Jerry Brown says he plans to end prison privatization and release non-violent offenders early to relieve prison overcrowding. Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich criticized the move in a recent statement:

The Governor needs to stop playing politics with prison advocates and labor unions and take responsible actions to comply with the court order in a cost-effective way without jeopardizing public safety.

The option to contract for more prison beds provides safe and immediate relief to prison overcrowding and achieves compliance with the court order without causing harm to our communities. Early release and shifting additional prisoners to the counties are dangerous options and will increase crime. The contracting option is cost-effective with $65 versus approximately $150 per day per bed.
