Dozens of meteors should be visible in the night sky Saturday when the 2012 Perseid Meteor Shower, "the most popular meteor shower of the year," peaks, according to a local JPL scientist.
Jane Houston Jones of JPL and the Old Town Sidewalk Astronomers said in her monthly "What's Up" video that bright meteors, some with bright trails, should be visible during the Perseid shower Saturday night.
The peak of the Perseids should be at about 10 p.m. no matter the time zone, so the meteors are already visible on the east coast, according to NASA. The meteors come at a rate of about one per minute, NASA says.
