City Clerk: Voter Turnout Expected to Slightly Outpace Last Election

City Clerk Alice Atkins said she was impressed with the turnout Tuesday considering that a write-in candidate was the only challenger to the two candidates on the ballot.

City Clerk Alice Atkins said she expects voter turnout Tuesday will barely outpace the turnout from the last election after all the provisional and vote-by mail ballots are counted.

Turnout in 2011 was 14.9 percent and Atkins said she expects this election's percentage to slightly eclipse that number when all votes are tallied.

"All things considered, I expect it will nudge the overall turnout a half a point higher," Atkins said.

Atkins said she expected a lower turnout--somewhere around 10 percent--this time around since the only challenger to the two council candidates on the ballot was a write-in candidate.

Though turnout could be up slightly, it's still much lower than in years past, Atkins said. The turnout was 18.9 percent in 2009, she said.
