City Council Picture Unclear Ahead of April Elections
The mayor's seat and two spots on the Monrovia City Council are up for grabs when local voters hit the polls next year and at least one councilmember may not be running for reelection.
The Monrovia City Council voted Tuesday to hold the city's municipal elections on April 9, setting the stage for a race that could reshape the council.
Mayor Mary Ann Lutz's term expires next year and she confirmed in an interview Wednesday that she will be running for reelection. The City Council seats of Joe Garcia and Clarence Shaw will also be up for grabs.
Garcia told Patch Wednesday that he has not decided whether to run again and is considering retiring from office.

"I'm basically giving it some serious consideration whether I want to go for a fifth term or not," Garcia said, noting that another run was certainly possible.
Shaw, who remains on leave from the council while deployed by the U.S. Army, did not immediately return a call asking if he would seek reelection.

The filing period for candidates opens December 17, 2012 and lasts until January 11, 2013, according to a council agenda report.
