Construction will begin this spring on an automated car wash on Huntington Drive across the street from Target.
Planning Division Manager Craig Jimenez told the Monrovia Now blog that intersection improvements have been taken care of near the car wash site in the 900 block of East Huntington Drive and construction should begin this spring.
The property near the Duarte border has been vacant since 2007 and the city has trouble finding a developer for it, according to a planning commission staff report.
"This property was improved with a fast-food restaurant (Angelo’s Burgers) that closed down several years ago and remained vacant until it was demolished in 2007," the report states. "There have been previous projects approved or preliminarily reviewed (2-story office building, pharmacy, dialysis center, restaurant) for this site that never came to fruition. It is a difficult site to develop due to its long width and shallow depth."
The car wash will be open between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. in the winter and will stay open until 9 p.m. otherwise. Del Taco is considering opening a restaurant on the other part of the property.
