County to Launch Winter Anti-DUI Campaign

Los Angeles County enforcement and police agencies will be out in force during the holiday season to nab suspected drunk drivers.

County enforcement with the Avoid the 100 Anti-DUI task force will conduct 32 DUI/driver’s license checkpoints and deploy 202 roving DUI patrols during the two-week campaign launching Friday, Dec. 16. to Sunday, Jan. 1.

DUI checkpoints are placed in locations that the Avoid the 100 DUI task force say have the best chance to deter intoxicated drivers, according to a press statement. Drug recognition experts will be at most of the checkpoints.

During last year's winter campaign, 2,406 DUI arrests were made in LA County.

In Dec. 2009, 753 people were killed across the nation in accidents involving individuals with blood alcohol concentrations of .08 or higher. In California alone, there were 57 alcohol-related deaths on highways and streets.

California Highway Patrol will also conduct a maximum enforcement period in the region’s freeways, state highways and unincorporated roads during this two-week campaign.

“The message is simple, drive sober or get pulled over,” said Police Lt. Rob Lamborghini, Avoid Coordinator from the Glendora Police Department, in a press statement. “Drinking alcohol or being under the influence of drugs do not mix with driving. If you plan to consume alcohol, you should also plan not to get behind the wheel of a vehicle or ride a motorcycle.”
